Choosing the right walker

Choosing the right walker

It can be difficult to choose the right walker for yourself. There can be lots of questions about height adjustability, making sure it’s versatile, where you’ll most need to use your walker. We’ll be talking about the best option for using in and around your home, and what the benefits are.

Things to think about

It’s important to think about what flooring type you have in and around your home – do you have mainly tiles, laminate or some other smooth surface? Or a mix? Are your doorways fairly wide or are they standard size? Are there steps you’ll need to manoeuvre?

If you’ve answered yes to those questions, it might be a good idea to have a look at a zimmer frame walker. These are very good with smooth, flat surfaces and narrower doorways. For example, the rubber grips on the bottom provide better grip than wheels.

That said, if you have more carpet in your home you might benefit more from a two wheeled narrow frame walker, which would be a great alternative to a zimmer frame. These are also available in options that fold down for transportability, and tend to be very lightweight. This would be a good option for someone wanting to use a walker out and about and in the home.

Which is right for you?

It’s important to think about your own unique needs when making your decision. If you have a need for extra stability or you have a specific disability, you need to choose a walker that offers you the correct support.

Most walkers have a weight limit, which is something to keep in mind. A Bariatric walker is purpose built to support up to 220kg, with wider grips and purpose built support. These are available in folding models, meaning you can still use these when out and about and allow for easier transportation.
